QUESTION: Zucchini pests

Our zucchini plants were doing fine then today I went back to find two plants pulled out of the ground and the roots eaten. Then what ever animal did it peed on them, Does any one have any idea of what animal would do this to the zucchini? This is the first time we have had this problem. Also what should I do to prevent this from happening again? Thanks.
