Ah, tomatoes! What would summer be without them?

For vegetable gardeners across the country, garden grown tomatoes are the beautiful jewels of summer. Tomatoes are technically a fruit, but eaten as a vegetable although some of these delectables can be as sweet as candy.

In a major taste test at the end of the summer, dozens of gardeners gathered for a tomato tasting party to find the tastiest tomatoes grown in their large farm gardens, small urban plots and patio containers. The three categories included large slicing tomatoes, cherry size tomatoes and paste tomatoes.

Here are the tomatoes voted best of the best in each category:

Slicing Tomatoes

  • Virginia Sweets
  • Kellogg's Breakfast
  • Rose
  • Garden Treasure
  • Persimmon
  • Chef's Choice
  • Black Krim

Cherry Tomatoes

  • Jasper
  • Sungold
  • Orange Paruche
  • Juliet

Paste Tomatoes

  • Speckled Roman
  • Black Icicle
  • Polish Linguisa
  • Blush

There are some interesting tomato winners I'll have to add to my list for planting and growing next season. I'm especially intrigued by the Rose tomato that's said to taste like the popular Brandywine, but is more productive. In the cherry tomato category, I'd like to give Jasper and Orange Paruche a try, too.

What were your favorite tomatoes from this season? Are there any on this tomato tasting list you'd like to try?
