I couldn't help but marvel at the arrival of the 2019 Whole Seed Catalog from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. This issue is about three times the size of the 2006 catalog, the first one I received. I've been a fan of everything the seed company has accomplished since then.

I remember being taken with the idea of a gardening catalog that featured nothing but heirloom seeds. In that 2006 edition, there were over 130 new items, all non-hybrid, non-GMO, non-treated and non-patented. That catalog, like several others in those early years, featured artwork by Jere Gettle's mom.

To get a feel for the amount of growth the company has experienced, consider the 2006 issue was the 9th annual edition and 85,000 copies were printed. The 2019 catalog is the 22nd edition and will reach 700,000 U.S. gardeners!

The catalog and its distribution aren't the only things that have grown at Baker Creek. The Gettle family has expanded from two children to four. Jere, his wife Emilee, and their daughters Sasha and Malia welcomed two children from China, Ella and Cyan.

To help celebrate the company's success, Baker Creek is offering free shipping on all its orders for 2019. "We want to make heirloom seeds available to all -- any time you need them...," Jere writes in the new catalog.

This catalog includes many new varieties, like a true pink celery and black goji berries from China, pearly white bitter melons, and two-foot-long carrots from Japan. Of course, a catalog this size is loaded with other new seed selections from about 100 different countries.

In addition to the many fruits and vegetables, there are dozens of unusual herbs and fabulous flowers to add to our ever-expanding vegetable gardens next season.
