Fruit, nuts and seeds are especially popular with wild birds in winter.
A string of fruit is one way to attract wild birds to your garden when the weather turns cold. Be sure to place the edible decorations where youll be able to watch the fun.

The holiday season is the perfect time to get busy and help feed wild birds. This easy-to-make fruit and seed ornament string attracts birds to your garden and gives them an added boost of nourishment during cold weather.

To make a fruit ornament you'll need:

  • Orange and apple slices
  • Needle and thread
  • Wild bird seed
  • Peanut butter
  • Wax paper

Let's get started:

  1. Slice the oranges and apples thickly so they'll be easier to string.
  2. Dip or spread peanut butter on half of the apple slices.
  3. Dip or sprinkle the wild bird seed onto the peanut butter; set aside on wax paper to dry.
  4. Use the needle and thread to string through the rind of the orange slices. Alternate the string with an apple slice.
  5. Carefully move the string of fruit ornaments outside and hang where birds can get to them -- and where you can observe them.

There are other kinds of easy-to-make bird feeders that are good projects for kids of all ages. For more tips on feeding wild birds, visit the National Wildlife Federation's website.
