Cabbage is a cool-season crop that most gardeners plant in their large vegetable gardens. But even if you're a small-space gardener you can have fun growing cabbages, too.

Early spring is the time to start thinking about planting cabbage, because this vegetable can handle a light frost. Just calculate the last expected frost date for your region and plant cabbage 2 to 3 weeks before that.

Select a big enough container, place it on the patio, deck or balcony where it will get plenty of sun and fill it with a good quality potting mix.

The easiest way to get started is by planting transplants. Of course, if you want to start your cabbage by seed, you can start seeds indoors and transplant when cabbages have 5 or 6 true leaves.

Be sure to acclimate plants outdoors before planting and then set them in containers so the lowest leaves are at soil level. Give cabbage room to grow. That means you might be able to plant just one cabbage per container.

You can grow Chinese cabbage in your container garden, too. This kind of cabbage needs less space to grow than round cabbage and can be planted in spring and again in the fall.

Look for varieties that form tightly-wrapped, barrel-shaped heads or heads made of tall upright leaves. Plant either seeds or transplants once soil is workable. Cabbage likes rich soil, consistent water and a balanced fertilizer. Use an organic mulch, like untreated grass clippings, to help maintain soil moisture.

Harvest heads when they're firm and fully developed and either uproot the plant or cut it from the roots. Use cabbage fresh or add to a garden-fresh stir fry.

Do you have a favorite variety of cabbage you like to grow? If so, please share your suggestions here.

After you try it, show it off to other members in the
