A Simple Supper, Straight from the Garden
comments (0) June 15th, 2009I shop at the grocery store once a week, but during the growing season, I "shop" in my garden every day.
On one of my recent garden walkthroughs, I was pleasantly surprised to find all the fixings for a simple, tasty supper: garlic scapes, greens, and strawberries.
Scapes are the flower stalks of garlic, and they have a pleasant, mildly garlicky flavor. I sliced the scapes into sections and sautéed them in olive oil, along with a little hot pepper and black pepper, then boiled a large pot of water, cooked and drained the pasta, mixed in the scapes, and served with a little grated cheese.
Salad greens are at their peak now. I picked an assortment of spinach, cress, lettuce, sorrel, tatsoi, radish greens, and arugula.
The berries after a quick wash, went straight into bowls. Unadorned.
To drink, there was iced tea, brewed with several stalks of mint.
What's ripe in your garden now? Post a comment here, post a recipe, or post photos in the gallery.
