Chives Are Easy and Tasty
comments (0) February 9th, 2009The chive plant, a mild-flavored member of the onion family, is prized for its stalks. It’s one of the easiest herbs to grow. Plant a clump in a sunny spot, water, and forget about it. It’s pest free and mostly (but not always) ignored by deer passing through my yard. It returns year after year. Clumps spread gradually, but not invasively, and can be divided from time to time
Chives are one of the first plants to emerge in early spring, and that’s when the shoots are at their best. Use them as a garnish, in salads, or to flavor soups and omelets. After several weeks, pink flowers appear, and these make an attractive garnish as well.
