QUESTION: Keeping Groundhogs Out of Raised Beds

This year I built three new raised beds per the posting /plans from the site. I put a fence around all beds with two lattice gates. The summer was fine: All the tomato, beans, peppers, cucumbers, and squash went untouched. This fall I put in a crop of cabbages and finally a groundhog dug under the gate and wiped them out.  As the beds are 16.5 inches high. How much higher would they have to be to keep a groundhog from climbing over? I need to plan my defenses.

ColleenF writes: Ok, so what do I do with the destructive armadillos we have here in southwest Louisiana? They get into my asparagus bed, roses....you name it! I have threatened to sit up at night, all night if needed, just so I can shoot the critter!!

nancynursez637 writes: Also next time you make beds in the bottom of them you can put 1/4th inch square hardware cloth before you ever add the soil back. You might try a sturdy hardware cloth fence around the inside of your cabbage bed which would be cheaper than building the boards up.

Ruth writes: Perhaps you should build a better barrier, as suggested here: http://www.vegetablegardener.com/item/7193/raised-bed-pest-cover. If the critters are digging underneath, try extending your fencing 6 to 8 inches or more into the ground.
