I would classify Johnny’s as my good ol’ standby catalog. The selection is huge—offering traditional varieties and a nice array of exclusive offerings. More often than not, if I have a gap in my seed order, I find the gap filler at Johnny’s. For example, last year I needed to find a heavy-producing cherry tomato that could also be used to make sauce. Those are three requirements that usually can’t be found in one variety—but thankfully, ‘Tomatoberry Garden’ fit the bill. After a banner 2010 season I can tell you that this has become my must-have tomato of 2011.

Johnny’s is owned and operated by its employees, which is reflected in the high quality of their products. I also love that the company offers a wide selection of pelleted seed. (Anyone who has ever tried to sew microscopic petunia or carrot seeds will understand why this is so great.) Aside from seeds, the company also offers a fine selection of tools and gardening books. On my wish list this year is The Winter Harvest Handbook, a new book by Maine resident Eliot Coleman.

The Johnny’s Web site has a ton of cultural information on the crops they sell and even a handful of how-to videos (including ones that help show you how to use some tricky tools). And a final plug for Johnny’s: Their customer service is impeccable.

suitors writes: I ordered once from Johnny's in October. Someone hacked into their computer system in December & had access to my (and everyone's) charge card info -- and they notified me in February! Setting aside questions about why they would retain that information & then wait months to tell me that my credit card info was compromised, I decided that lots of good folks sell seeds. I can't afford a company this sloppy with my credit information
