Like most avid vegetable gardeners in the dormant season, I've been overdosing on seed catalogs as I wait for the days to lengthen and the ground to thaw. When you do this, your eyes eventually glaze over, as you read the descriptions. Distinguishing one type from another can be difficult, and the choice often boils down to a coin flip. Variety after variety, page after page, most catalog copy promises ease of planting, reliable germination, stalwart resistance to disease, productivity beyond your wildest expectations, and a taste and appearance worthy of a five-star meal. For everything. You rarely read "This variety was a huge disappointment in our trials, but maybe you will have better luck."

If the catalog has photos, and most do, they help  a lot, at least in visualizing the ideal result. When it comes to the real world (your minimally fertilized garden in July, after a two-week rainy spell where the weeds and slugs are duking it out for first dibs on your bedraggled veggies), your mileage, as they say, may vary. Considerably. But none of that matters in the dead of winter. You can dream, and you do. Photo after photo, page after page. Even the photos become tiresome, and it takes something extra to wake you up.

That's where plant names come in, and I must confess that I laughed out loud when I saw Burpee's RSVPea. What a perfect name! Did I spring for them? No, but only because I'd already ordered enough peas and snap peas to feed an invading army, and we do have to draw the line somewhere.

I just purchased some pepper seeds because the pepper is named Carmen, which happens to be my name. I sell at a farmer's market sometimes and can't wait until someone asks me which peppers they are.
