A Garden in a Can

The growing numbers of new home gardeners, combined with some anticipated seed shortages this season, may create problems for gardeners who aren’t used to so much competition for gardening supplies.

To compound the problem, 37% of gardening households plan to increase their gardens this season, according to a recent gardening trends report.

Even if seeds are plentiful, there's bound to be a spike in the price of in-demand seeds.

But just this week I ran across a unique seed option for gardeners who want to make sure they'll never run out of seeds—garden seeds in a can.

Unique Packaging Keeps Seeds Fresh

Canned Garden Seeds is a product of Mountain Valley Seed, Inc., a wholesale seed company based in Salt Lake City that opened in 1985. Mountain Valley Seed offers vegetable and herb seed, but also sells seed for flowers, grasses, sprouting and even wild flowers to home gardeners.

The Canned Garden Seeds holds 16 of the most popular vegetable varieties and includes corn, onion, spinach, lettuce, summer and winter squash, peas, beets, cabbage, carrot, cucumber, radish, tomato, Swiss chard, peppers and pole beans. It’s a complete garden in a can.

Each packet of seeds is packaged in a hermetically sealed, triple-foil package which can be re-sealed. That means one can of seeds will last for at least 5 years, but some seeds may last longer.

In fact, company president Demetrios Agathangelides, told me one customer had been using the same can of seeds for 10 years and was still getting exceptionally good crops. He said it’s because the seed is dried for the optimum moisture content for long-term storage.

He also mentioned each can of garden seeds holds enough seed to plant a garden the size of 2/3 acre and that every seed is 100 percent open-pollinated. That means gardeners can save seed at the end of each season to grow true-to-variety seeds the next year.

Planting Guide Included

Each can of seeds includes an 8-page gardening guide with instructions for planting, harvesting and collecting seeds.

For gardeners who plan on planting year after year, Canned Garden Seeds may be the best way to save seed money and to ensure an endless crop.

After you try it, show it off to other members in the

kitchgardner writes: Funny you should mention this product. I had heard about this from a friend. I did a ton of research on "survival seeds" and these guys are not only the best price but the best product. They go through a rigorous process to prepare their seeds and have been testing their stored seed for more than 10 years. I purchased a can for our family and one for my parents and siblings who live all over the US. Everybody has had good success so far.
