Plants go in on Memorial Day. The original garden was set up on Mothers day.

After reading an issue of Fine Gardening magazine, I was inspired to create a straw garden from straw bales. I purchased the straw at the local Agway. The article called for rice straw but after many calls to garden centers this was the only type available in my area of Connecticut. I followed their instructions exactly on how to assemble this garden with the all the ingredients. Per the article I am waiting for the straw to decompose a bit before I put in my veggies. So far so good!

I planted the garden on Memorial day. The garden did not break down at all. It was difficult to "pry apart" the straw and insert the plants. I needed to hack at it with an ax. I added more compost and put the plants in. You can see how tight the straw bales are by how far the pitchfork will go in. I think I'm going to get some marigold seeds and sprinkle the seeds on the edges of the bales.

epeavey1 writes: How many bales of straw did you use? Did you set them up on their ends and then open them up? Can you set them with the string flat on the ground then add compost to the top of the bales? I have some bales I have used for a compost bin I want to use them to plant in this spring. Trying to figure out the best way to do it.
