If you're noticing that your garden or lawn is looking dry or brown, it's natural for us to run screaming into the streets in fear that our tomatoes have the dreaded blight, pest attack, or some other horrifying disease. Don't panic immediately. It could also be that your watering system is failing you.

So, go to the main control panel and do a test-run of your watering system by turning it to the manual setting (don't forget to reset the system to auto when you're done testing). All watering systems should be checked whether you use soaker hoses, drip irrigation systems, or sprinklers. You're looking for clogged drip lines, kinked hoses, and blocked heads. Also, check that sprinkler heads are facing the right way and are the right kind, too.

For instance, if a pop up sprinkler that has lawn on one side and cement on the other - be sure to use a half-head that sprays water only in the lawn's direction. Even the correct sprinkler heads can get turned a bit, which can leave a part of the lawn or garden dry or brown while giving your driveway a good soaking. And no matter how much you water that cement; it isn't going to grow.

If you find that your watering system is working correctly and you still have brown spots on your plants or lawn - now you can panic. It just might be the dreaded tomato blight.
