Goats have long been considered the poor man's cow, but in recent years they've been rapidly stealing the livestock spotlight. Goats have earned the reputation as one of the greenest and least expensive livestock around and you don't have to purchase one to reap their benefits. For instance, they do a bang-up job taking care of business in an overgrown yard or piece of land, which comes in handy for many gardeners.

Goats make quick work of brush, weeds, and things you'd rather not deal with yourself like poison oak, ivy, blackberry, pampas grass, and yellow star thistle. The truth is that they'll actually do a better job than you will. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area we have an awesome goat rental company called Goats R Us.  It's a family owned and operated business that provides "environmentally friendly vegetation management" to the public.

I don't know about you, but I consider it a perk to have these friendly visitors in my yard where I can pal around with them while they do the work that I should be doing. Goats that live among people are docile animals and can be extremely friendly - and they're certainly entertaining.

If the thought of clearing a little land for next year's garden bed in an organic and unique way appeals to you, ask around and find a goat rental company in your area. If you have a small area and need just a few for a couple of days, a local 4H group that has a goat project might be able to help.
