I work as a architect using sustainable design methods in my day job. After a few years of mealy tomatoes and half wilted herbs in the grocery stores, I started gardening in any container I could find on a small apartment patio, trying to create a little mini oasis in the city using the design techniques I use every day for my clients. After moving to a house with a yard, I am toiling with a hardworking cowboy to create a garden that is a refuge for our stomachs and our souls. I remember a large vegetable garden when I was a small child and learning from parents and grandparents with frustratingly green thumbs. We try to garden as naturally as possible, but by no means perfect in our garden or our lives. We are learning and designing our own way of gardening, and learning that labels and fancy terms don't tell nearly as compelling a story as seeds sown, plants grown, and produce harvested.
