I was raised on a working farm (300 acres) in NE Tennessee. Went into the service (Army). So happy to be alive when my tour was over that I traveled the U.S. (fishing and playing hermit). Ended up in New Orleans where I worked in the Gulf of Mexico for Twenty-eight years. I had one of the few gardens in the City limits and hundreds of indoor-outdoor plants. Moved from there to Nickelsville, Va. Took care of my Grandmother and Uncle until their passing..bought the homeplace...cleared it and started planting flowers and trees. Major gardening and berries, nut trees cherries, plum. I love to fish Smallmouth Bass and have been known to enjoy cooking food for friends. I decided to become a Master Gardener here in Va., (14 years ago), and have enjoyed sharing ideas, plants and seeds with like minded friends since.

Re: Scenes from Smith's Acres Farm
My little man will eat anything that hits the table but he really likes it when I boil the sprouts in lightly salted, lemon added (about 1/2 lemon with a bit of honey), water for about five minutes. Drain and let cool.

Have you thought about building a fence (woven wire or concrete wire about four feet off the ground) attached securely to T posts running parallel with the ground. Doing container growing...let your tomato vines run over the fencing...which will allow your tomatoes to be picked standing up and utilize the shade produced to have a lettuce bed underneath. This will allow you to have tender lettuce during the hot days of summer and will make it much slower to bolt.
