I'm a long-time cook (and the web editor at FineCooking.com) but a newbie gardener. Ive just bought my first home with a generous backyard, and my husband and I are plunging headlong into vegetable gardening, with plans that are maybe a little over-ambitious. All advice is welcomed!

The blank slate
On Monday, my future garden was literally a blank, white sheet. Sheet of snow that is.

Re: The (Tomato) Stakes Are High
Great idea! We just cut down a giant hedge too, and we have plenty of long, skinny branches that will make great stakes. So I've already violated the rule about putting in stakes before you plant your seedlings. How much damage might I do to the roots if I drive stakes in 12 inches deep now?
