Every year without fail, my containers of herbs, flowering plants and tomatoes are "dug up" by an animal (not sure what animal it is just yet). It appears that what ever it is will dig them up at the roots and leave them lying there. I also have a raised bed with a fountain that my husband built for me that is always attacked.  How can I tell what animal is doing this and what can I do about it?  Nothing is sadder than going outside and seeing my plants dug up...

LindaBrandon writes: Sounds like a chipmunk (ground squirrel). I have to put fairly good-sized gravel/rocks in my containers to keep the little rascals out. Suspending your containers (remember the old macrame plant holders from the 70s and 80s?) may keep all the critters out.
