These beautiful sunflowers were a labor of love. Having survived foraging deer (which decimated half the crop), transplanting (to cover resulting holes), and many newbie mistakes.. these awesome sunflowers toughed it out through some pretty rough conditions and blossomed into the gorgeous specimens you see here..so super satisfying.. leisurely lemonade picnics in their shade, enjoying delicious wine by the light of the full moon.. ahhh..garden therapy @ its best. I started from seed indoors to stave off critters that can't resist baby sunflowers-transplanted outdoors when they were about 3". Unfortunately midnight critters still came and ate half the crop :/ After that I invested in spray & powder deer repellent; (since was kinda expensive)experimented with making my own. Transplanting was tricky(and a lot of heavy work)-try to keep root ball intact- pay special attention to tap root integrity-to ease transition fortify soil in new location with organic plant food (I also sprinkled rooting powder too for good measure). And of course, a lot of H20- a soaker hose @ base of flowers was helpful for me.
