Re: How and When to Water Your Garden

Very timely article. This topic has been weighing on my mind with the recent heat wave. I wonder how often most people actually water their outdoor gardens...

I’m guessing that container plants need to be watered even more frequently. For example, I was at the dentist and overheard a gardening book author say that she spent 45 minutes a day watering her container plants! Yikes, I clearly need to do a better job.

How often to other people water their container gardens?

Re: The Starter Garden

Great recommendations Ruth! I tried everything you mentioned (with success!) except cucumbers in my first veggie garden last year. Cherry tomatoes worked out really well, but I had some difficulty with the bigger tomato varieties.

I'm going to try pole and bush beans this year. I heard that the pole beans produce over a longer period of time? Last year, I only planted bush beans. I got gallons of green beans one week in July and that was it.

I also had a lot of trouble with pests. They went to town on my green bean and zucchini leaves. I have no idea what kind they were, but will have to do some research on how to foil them this year. -Gina

Re: Beets

Beautiful! I planted red and golden beets last year, but only took one home to eat. I cooked it up using a recipe from the Fine Cooking blog. I'll post a link if I can find it.

While I was waiting for them to get bigger, a critter ate them all! Oh well... I'm excited to try them again this year.
