One solution to rotting boards is to line the planter box with garden plastic. I folded it over a piece of lathe and then secured the lathe to the sides of the planter box with staples. It keeps the beds from rotting for a LONG time (more than 20 years in my case) and helps keep the soil from drying out.

This approach alleviates any worries about the type of wood you use and makes it possible to use whatever is available because it does not come in contact with the soil.
