Re: 2010 Tomato Roundup

I started my tomato plants from seed as always (Paul Robson, Carnival, and Elfie - all heirlooms I've grown before, all beefsteak size) and set out sturdy seedlings in late April as per usual here in the SF South Bay (San Jose, Sunset zone 15).

As of this writing I have had exactly 4 tomatoes, all of them very small. We did have an unusually mild summer, so I am blaming the weather. Everyone in my neighborhood that grows tomatoes has had a similar yield. My friends who live father south (Gilroy and Morgan Hill areas) tell me that they had a best-ever season.

Re: QUESTION: Planting peas & tomatoes

Hi -

I don't think it is too late to start seeds... but you may want to consider growing the non-pole type peas if you don't think you have time until things get hot. My peas here in zone 9 are about 3 - 4 inches tall, and they are Thomas Laxton (a tall heirloom). I will be harvesting them until June if last year is any indication.

Same with tomatoes - maybe instead of beefstake, grow smaller varieties than you did last year.
